Jesus even despite being the son of the Most high God and having authority over everything understood the importance of prayer in ones spiritual life. He set a legacy and an example that is worthy of admiration. He understood what His mission was and realized that He needed God –His father every time in His mission thus He often created a spiritual atmosphere where God, Holy Spirit and even Holy angles used to move to encourage, speak and guide Him. In Hebrews 5:7-8 the Bible says;
Heb 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
In fact He founded His three years humanity redemption mission on prayers. He started on high prayer note when He fasted for forty days and night (Matt 4:1-2) and ended with a prayer on the cross. He prayed and said, “father into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46) .Jesus had a habit of leaving His disciples and going to a solitary place just to find time with God.
Luke 22:39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
Jesus on the mountain side and after the beatitudes taught on prayer and fasting and challenged us to pray and fast in the right way and not as the heathens and the hypocrites do. In Matthew 7:7 Jesus taught that;
Mat 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
It is quite apparent from Jesus life in the Bible that He had praying time that He had set apart for the His father.
I want you to get it clearly my brother my sister, Jesus is the son of God and He has power over everything .He had ability to command things without praying and yet He chose to fast and pray fervently, zealously and with commitment. If this was the case, who are you not to pray and fast, who are you that you can ignore the place and the importance of prayers in your life? Remember you are a mortal man who solely depend on God .I challenge you, pray until you pray!
These are other important characters in the Bible that we cannot leave behind when talking about prayers. In the day of Pentecost in the book of Acts chapter two, the disciples waited for Holy Spirit in the upper room while praying and the Bible say they were 120 in number. The prayers prepared the environment and set a spiritual atmosphere for the promised gift-The Holy Spirit such that not even one was spared from the touch. Glory, I like this! It this power that will later take the apostles across the remaining 27 chapters in the book of Acts. In fact remove this prayer day and you will remove the other chapters since there will be no Acts of the Apostles. Got it friend?
The Bible says that the apostles devoted themselves to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayers and everyday they continued to meet together in the temple courts.
Act 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Act 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
The strength of the apostles was in cooperate prayers that they used to make during fellowship and from the Bible the Holy Spirit used to visit them in a might way. How many times do you attend prayer meetings and fellowships? My friend , to attain a higher level of spiritual maturity you need to move a little higher, put a higher gear and launch deeper in prayers and believe you me you will have the catch that will break your nets.
This is a well known character from the Bible that needs no introduction. His integrity, wisdom and disciplined prayer life is well illustrated in the book of Daniel. The Bible says that three times a day he got down on his knees to pray and give thanks to God.
Daniel 6:10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
He knew his God and even after decree to stop praying to the almighty God from the king he could not stop. God was touched by Daniel prayers and He could not hesitate saving him from the hungry lions in the den. Daniel never cared whether he was alone since other people had adhered to the King’s decree but he remained faithful to his God without looking at his friends or his people. This is the problem we are facing as the body of Christ, many are the time we lack self commitment, zeal and self-drive during prayer meetings. Some fail to attend prayer meetings because so and so doesn’t attend too. We want to found in prayers because pastors and leaders are found or because they are giving us much pressure to do so. I challenge us to be zealous, committed and self-driven when comes to prayers whether personal or cooperate without forgetting the fasting.
The Bible says that two or three people shall come together, agree and ask the lord in heaven shall do it for them. Brethren is not about the number or the attendants in the prayer meetings but all about the desire to pray that is in your heart and this is what should be your driving force and strength.
Mat 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
You can make this brief prayer and the lord is listening to grant your request;
Lord Jesus, help me to be committed to prayers and prayer meetings. Help me to be zealous and have a self-driven heart .I surrender my prayer life to you and I plead for help. Amen!
